Benefits of Reiki: What People Report and What Research Shows

By Jackie Jin, Usui Holy Fire® III Reiki Master–Teacher, Cypress, TX

The benefits people most often describe after Reiki are relaxation, less tension, better sleep, and a steadier sense of emotional balance. Research on Reiki is limited, so this guide separates what clients commonly report from what studies have and have not shown. I offer Reiki in person in Cypress, Texas and online, and I want you to have an accurate picture before you book.

Commonly Reported Benefits of Reiki

These are experiences people describe after sessions. They are personal reports and do not make medical claims.

Relaxation and Calm

The most common response to a Reiki session is a deep sense of calm. Because a session asks nothing of you beyond resting, many people find it is time to settle in a way that daily life rarely allows. One client, Danni M., described it this way: “I felt a real sense of calm and for lack of a better way to describe it, I felt incredibly cared for.”

Stress Relief and Emotional Balance

People often say they feel less emotionally tense and better able to handle stress in the days after a session. Some experience emotional release during the session itself, which can feel like relief once it passes.

Better Sleep

Some clients report sleeping more deeply after Reiki, and some fall asleep during the session. These changes can appear that evening or over the following days.

Mental Clarity

Mental quiet during the session is common, and some people describe a clearer head afterward. Others notice very little during the session and only see changes later.

A Sense of Being Cared For

Because a Reiki session is gentle and non-directive, it gives people a space to receive without needing to talk, perform, or fix anything. Many clients name this as the part they value most.

What Does Research Say About the Benefits of Reiki?

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), part of the National Institutes of Health, states that Reiki “hasn’t been clearly shown to be effective for any health-related purpose.” Reiki has been studied for pain, anxiety, and depression, and NCCIH describes most of that research as low quality with inconsistent results. NCCIH also notes that Reiki has not been shown to have harmful effects.

This is why I describe the benefits above as what people experience and avoid presenting Reiki as a treatment for any condition. If you are managing pain, anxiety, depression, or any other health concern, Reiki can be a complement to the care you already receive and does not replace it.

Possible Temporary Effects After Reiki

Some people feel tired, emotional, or unusually reflective after a session, and some have vivid dreams that night. These effects are usually temporary. Drinking water and resting afterward is suggested, and you can tell me if anything feels uncomfortable.

The Limits of Reiki

Reiki is not a replacement for medical care and it is not a quick fix. It does not promise to change your life. What it offers is time and space to rest, and the results differ from person to person and from session to session.

Who Might Enjoy Reiki?

Reiki suits people who feel stretched thin, are moving through a transition, or want a gentle practice that asks nothing of them. You do not need a belief system or any previous experience.

Benefits of Reiki FAQ

Does Reiki really work?

People commonly report relaxation, calm, and better sleep after sessions. Research has not clearly shown Reiki to be effective for any health-related purpose, according to NCCIH, so I describe Reiki as a complementary practice and describe its benefits as personal experiences.

How soon will I notice the benefits of Reiki?

Some people notice calm during the first session, and others notice changes over the following days. Some feel very little at first.

Can Reiki help with anxiety or pain?

Reiki has been studied for both, and NCCIH describes the research as low quality with inconsistent results. Many people find Reiki relaxing, and I encourage anyone managing anxiety or pain to keep working with their licensed providers.

Are there side effects?

NCCIH reports that Reiki has not been shown to have harmful effects. Fatigue, emotional release, and vivid dreams are sometimes reported and are usually temporary.

Can I receive the benefits of Reiki online?

Yes. Many clients receive Reiki over Zoom from their own space. See distance Reiki for prices and how sessions work.
